The big one, or my west coast adventures. Day 13

The plan today was to go to the Grand Canyon,  western side. Then I found out a few things. First is the drive down the 9 miles of dirt road with potholes.  Not on my bike.

This is just not going to happen.

The second is the Native Indians charge $80 to get in. Now you know why, when your in Vegas, those Grand Canyon tours are so expensive.  What I should have done in hindsight, is go to the National Grand Canyon Park north of Williams,  AZ, when I was there. Maybe next time, and I thought metor crater was expensive ;-)

I finally got around to checking the air pressure in the tires. Something I've been forgetting to do. I usually remember about it after riding for a hour, by then it's too late. Anyway, the front was down 4 psi and the back was good, which for me was the important one.

While packing the bike, "Vacation" with Chevy Chase was on ( here's the leash, I'll go back and pick up the carcass), fitting don't you think. Then over to Starbucks for a coffee,  as last night's motel was so cheap, as not to have a free breakfast, coffee, shampoo and the smallest soap bars I'd ever seen. Don't forget 25 cents for a bucket of ice. Dinner at the Slizzer and I'd have a perfect white trash day. But hey, that's an orgional route 66 experience.  But, it was clean, cheap and I got a good night's sleep. It's 7:30 am and it's already 75°, it's going to be a hot day.

My abode for the night.

So back on route 66. I end up going through the old part of Kingman, AZ.  Kingman is a lot bigger than I thought.

A cheap place to sleep,  not much to do,  but they have a In-n-out burger.

Once I'm outside of Kingman,  AZ, those great views are back.

To the right of me, that's I-40 in the background.

To the front of me, not much.
To the left, another great view.

The road on the other hand could be better. They keep the speed down to 55 mph, to keep you from getting into too much trouble.  There's a lot of dips in the road for the desert washes. There are also watch out for donkey signs. Guess what,  there are wild donkey's out here. Just in case you were wondering,  the miners let them go in the desert after closing the gold mines.

From the side of the road. When I call "Hey Donkey" in a Scottish accent they don't come? Shrek, you let me down.

It won't be the last I'll see of these guys. Back on the bike and onward.

I was wondering why this store was out in the middle of nowhere.  That I was about to find that out very shortly.

Sitgreaves Pass.

What did I get myself into. When I finished riding for the day, I did some research.  The road that I had just riden was built in 1926. It had it all, narrow lanes,  switch backs and curves so you can't see what's coming. That and it takes you up to 3523 feet over the black mountains. I also had the pleasure of doing the cliff side lane instead of the mountain side. Sorry about no pic's,  but nowhere to really stop the bike to take the pics. On a top heavy bike this really pushed me to the limit. Am I glad that I did it. Ya, I felt that I accomplished something. I did borrow a pic from the Internet.

Doesn't that look like loads of fun.

Ironically,  this would have been way easier and fun, if I had done this on the scooter. Either the MP3 or the Lammy would have done. Anyway if you have/or want to do the pass, do it from west to east.  That way you have the mountain side to your right.

Anyway after coming down the other side I end up in Oatman, AZ.

I didn't hang around too long. One of the problems out in the desert are the fly's. They are everywhere,  I'm not sure if it's the donkey's that attract them. They do gunfights and all that stuff. The place does attract the biker crowd.

Since I'm not doing the Grand Canyon today, I decide on doing London Bridge instead.  It's 50 miles away, but doable.

The temperature is now starting to pick up it's gone over hundred degrees. I get into town (Lake Havasu City) and have some lunch.

London Bridge is cool and now I understand the "London Bridge is falling down" bit.

Time to head back to route 66 and finish the Arizona part of Route 66 before heading Laughlin, NV,  for my cheap Casino room for the night. Actually one of the noiser rooms of the trip, and I only lost $40 in the casino. No big winnings to pay for the trip.

Total mileage 3215 miles/ 5174 km.
