The big One, or my West Coast Adventures. Day 2

Well, after a ok sleep, that is,  as one of my ear plugs fell out. So now I know why the air conditioner sounded loud last night. I also ended up doing some laundry,  since I'm here for 2 days, it will give it time to dry. A cheap traveler's tip,  motel shampoo makes a great laundry detergent, and some smell good as well 😉. Those long john's from yesterday needed it. I also did my riding gloves as well, as they were kind of smelling  as well. I've got extra pairs of gloves, so no problem riding today.

Tross' s laundry service 😃

Well now I'm off to breakfast,  and some pretty slim pickings. No meat or eggs, so it's cereal and the usual bad motel coffee. I think tomorrow is going to be a Bob Evans breakfast day.

The weather forecast is for rain in the afternoon,  which is fine as this is a museum day. Luckly for me there's a Starbucks right down the street from the Henry Ford museum.  I can have a coffee while waiting for the museum to open and catch up on the blog. Yea, the motel coffee was that bad.

The Henry Ford Museum

Wow, this place is big.  It's part of a larger Ford Complex that goes on for miles. I've always wanted to come here after driving by the place on the way to the Kalamazoo scooter run all those years ago. But as time goes by, I forgot about it. Then a few months ago, I watched a program on one of the exhibits on display here. That's when I decided to add it to my cross country adventure.

This is the first thing that I see, the world's largest steam locomotive.  Until you've seen it, you have no idea of the scale, and I thought the one down at the CNE grounds was large.

Later I took a pic of a guy standing next to it, and I can't even show you how long it is.

So down the first couple of rows is the rail exhibits.  It's easier to just show you the pics.

That's me looking up, it's that tall.

My first train set had one of these.
From here it's over to the car section.

Those planes were small, I didn't even try and get in.
They started assembling in the morning.  This was the progress at 2 pm.

Nice enough to take home, or use on my trip.

Here are some more pics:

The Lincoln Hyw, one of favorite roads.

As you can see, the Henry Ford museum has some really nice displays .

From here it's over to the flight section.

The Henry Ford Museum isn't known as an airplane museum, so that's about it . Now on to the steam section.

I guess old Henry Ford had a weak spot for steam power. There's nothing small about about it.

The Dymaxion house was featured on a program that reminded me that I should come by for a visit, it didn't disappoint.

How much it would cost to heat this house in this day and age would be expensive. But it's so cool.

As you can see , the rain that was expected has arrived, but as I found out the bigger part of the museum is outside.
So I guess I'll be back sometime next year to see the rest.

Guess the video is still uploading.

The museum has a great Rosa Parks display with even the actual bus .

Another display of some 80's toys I grew up with

Remember these when you first got cable.

So now it's getting late and the weather app says there is a break in the rain,  which I'm going to take. When I get to the bike it seems I forgot to put away my gloves.  The good news is that unlike that time in Bradford,  PA, where they went walking, this pair were still here, but rather wet. I did have a spare pair in the top case , so I'm good to go. The rain starts up again,  but it's nothing like it was earlier.  Now into rush hour traffic.  Not up to Toronto standards, but a pain anyway.

A good day overall,  considering the weather.  I plan on making Detroit a weekender next year. With cheap rooms and some great attractions,  Detroit rocks.

Daily mileage:  23 miles/37km
Total mileage: 519 miles/ 835 km
